]]> LED mounted in a contact lens for possible virtual / augmented reality displays Every so often, internet news aggregator sites run a story about a research group that put an LED into a contact lens, then inserted it into a rabbit's eye. I figured that I would try the same thing, but put the lens into my own eye. I accomplished this by laminating a coil of wire and an 0402 surface-mount LED between two ordinary soft contact lenses. I was hoping the lenses would stick to each other, but they did not, so I ended up fixing the edges together by pinching the plastic together with hot tweezers. This held well enough to capture a minute of video with the LED illuminated in my eye. For video purposes, I mounted the LED facing outward. An actual VR/AR display would have the LED facing inward. I powered the LED by using a very primitive spark-gap transmitter built from a mechanical relay to send RF energy into a larger coil held near my eye. I made it from scrap I had laying around and it took about a week to build. I use standard DC-motors controlled with pulse width modulation, the LEDs are controlled with a modified bike light with adjustable frequency. I'm very sorry about the quality, my camera can't keep up and it makes a lot of flicker that isn't really there, and the LEDs oversaturate the image. The electrifying film sees Hughes light up the snow-covered French hills in a bespoke LED-enveloped suit courtesy of designer and electronics whizz John Spatcher. It is about 12 years old & has seen many configurations from gas powered tow plane, camera ship, autonomous test platform, to video transmitting search plane. In its current configuration, it is a Night Nite flying rc airplane with 30 meters of LED lights. (I know I said 6 meter in the video, but I was nervous) Thats a total of one thousand eight hundred individual led lights The motor is a Hacker B-50 L-13 with gearbox, prop is 20X10, thats a 20 inch diameter, with a Castle Creations 80 AMP speed control and a six cell 5000 Mah Thunder Power Extreme V2 li-po motor battery. The LED are powered by three separate 3 cell 2100 Mah li-po batteries. The ship was flown at the SCCMAS facility in Morgan Hill, California by Walter Colby. ]]> Small LED Light Panel Showdown www.learningdslrvideo.com I have really been in the need to a small 150 LED light that I can take anywhere. So I decided to compare 2 different brands one expensive and one inexpensive. These lights have so many uses, I even used one of them to fix my kitchen sink. I am not so much interested in using this as a key light, I am not interested in using it for accent lights, hair light for 3/4 back fill light, you name it, they have a ton of uses. In testing the two, I have found a clear winner. Konova Ledgo CN-B150 vs. Lite Panel MicroPro. Construction Both are equal in regards to construction, both are made out of light weight plastic and wouldn't survive a 4 foot drop on concrete. In fact I am not sure either of them would last a few years of constant use before breaking. For instance here is a review from someone line that had been using it for while: ...but it's cheaply made plastic. I have to tape the base because it bent and you can't buy replacement parts. I was kind of expecting a metal case from the Lite Panel because of the huge price difference and the pro in the name. To me if you put pro on something it needs to take the abuse. The Lite Panel is $390 and the Konova is only $130. When unboxing the Lite Panel I noticed this warning note saying if I installed the batteries wrong and kill that it is my fault, I was kind of taken back when I read this because this is a sure sign that the circuit design is not well thought out and has no fault protection built in <b>...</b>

]]> LED Box running Conway's 'Game of Life' This is my LED project which I thought I'd try running Conway's 'Game of Life' on. It's a game which uses a set of simple rules to create complex patterns. Each LED represents a cell which can be living (on) or dead (off). Every cell interacts with its surrounding eight neighbours as follows: 1. Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, as if caused by underpopulation. 2. Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as if by overcrowding. 3. Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives on to the next generation. 4. Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell. My version picks a random speed and LED colour. It also restarts after a set time, as often the game will reach an equilibrium and the patterns stop. I guess I should really be cleverer about this and detect when the patterns stop and then introduce new cells. In the multi colour version the cells change colour depending on how old they are - red being the youngest and white being are the oldest. There are actually 7 colours but it's hard to see them all in the video. The box itself uses 4 LED Matrices from Sparkfun driven by an Arduino.


]]> How To make LED Light Up Shoes I put together a shufflebot costume for halloween this year (LMFAO robot head guy)... I wanted to add to the costume since I'd be out and about and doing alot of shuffling - what better way than some LED shoes that light up when I step/dance. This was my take on this. There are a bunch of ways to do it I'm sure, but this cost me about $11 total, and worked (still works) really well. I'll add a parts list and some written instructions to this when I get a chance. Note: I chose to put my battery on the tongue b/c that's the only place it would fit. If you have shoes you want to cut up or maybe they have a big tongue near the top flap... you might be able to hide the wires better. Since this was for halloween, i didn't need to hide the wires. Shoes - pick whatever, but make sure that the sides of the soles are flat enough and wide enough to apply the LED material to. The LED strips are just under .5" wide. 2. Battery with connector - you can get these online or at Fry's or Radio Shack or any electronics place. You need 9-12V with 2-3A to get it to work. There are likely some battery solutions out there that would let you hide the battery better. Seek and ye shall find! 3. LED's - I like the RGB LEDs.
