]]> Augen 7" portable tv review Quick review on a 7" digital battery operated tv made by augen. It features a great atsc digital and ntsc analog tuner, neither having the usual reception issues of past ntsc only portable tv's. It can play video, audio and pictures via a built in multimedia center. It has inputs for multimedia via a multi-card reader and a mini usb to female usb port. The tv also has the ability to import or export video with its included rca cable set. The augen has relatively good build quality and a very nice red and black color scheme. Battery life is pretty good, between two and two and a half hours depending on display brightness settings (battery tests were not preformed while using the multimedia settings). The tv weighs only one pound and can easily be placed in a travel bag or a safe place in a car for long trips. Overall this is a great device, it's very capable with its extra functions and gives users something nice to look at, even when just sitting on a desk. ]]> RadioShack's AUVIO 3.5" Portable TV 16-972 This is a great lil TV...I LOVE IT! Ever since I was a kid I've been using portable TV's. My favorite portable TV of all time would have to be the SEGA GAME GEAR with it's TV tuner attachment. THIS Auvio TV is the only thing that comes close to my childhood experiences... It's too bad analog is a thing of the past, however this new digital IS NOT BAD if you give it a chance. (this TV will pick up on both signals...if they are out there of course) What I *LOVE* about this TV (and some of you might think I'm crazy) is the EPG it has going for it! THIS EPG ROCKS! Besides this portable TV I'm also an owner of a 52" Panasonic Plasma TV and the EPG on my 52" doesn't even come close to this lil guy! I wish RadioShack would come out with a 60" AUVIO TV, because if they put the same EPG in a 60" that they did with this lil guy I'd buy it in a heart beat! By the way, my only complaint is that there is no external antenna jack or A/V input mode for the TV, BUT, if you know what you're doing you can access the test jack on the side of the TV...just be warned it's like messing with the ant test jacks on cellphones! (see my video) I had to shave away some plastic to get to it, but I use that all the time with an external antenna. I just wish it wasn't a test jack but a 1/8th ant input jack. Oh well, can't get everything right RadioShack ;^)

]]> Portable TV tolerance to static A big problem with most portable TV's is that they go to "blue screen" when there is too much static in the video. I found a TV that is very tolerant to static in video, and it will go to "black" only when the video is almost completely gone. It's funny, really...I saw another store selling a TV, with a note saying that it doesn't go to blue screen...while they had a video on their page clearly showing it going to "black" when there was some static in the video. It doesn't matter if it's blue or black, if the picture goes away it's a bad thing! This video actually shows something else: 5.8GHz does not go through objects very well. This was a simple 25mW 5.8GHz transmitter, using the receiver built in to some FatShark goggles and fed to the TV. When the video goes away, I ask my assistant to turn around, and instantly the picture comes back, and it is very clear. Just his body was blocking the signal almost totally at that distance. That's one negative with 5.8Ghz and something users need to be aware of.

]]> Late-1970's/Early-1980's 13" Zenith Portable TV I purchased this small television set from a family living in a house in the Chicago suburbs built sometime during the mid-1970's. The CRT and the sound quality are excellent yet the reception from the cable has lately been coming in weak for some of the lower VHF CATV channels. I haven't been able to determine why, and I'm still unfamiliar with the "electronic tuning" that was available for some of these newer Zeniths. I believe that this TV was manufactured sometime between 1978 and 1983.

]]> Neat Old JVC Color TV/Radio/Cassette Portable Here's a nifty early 1980s piece of equipment...JVC's CX-500US combined a tape recorder, internal microphone, auxiliary input, AM/FM radio and a color television into one relatively portable package. It still works well today as demonstrated in this video. Small color TVs like this one seem to be very expensive. It was possible to buy a black and white one for as little as $20. Yet the price on the color ones never really dropped. Most of those cost at least $200 until LCD models replaced them. The cassette player does not record video at all. It is only capable of recording audio from TV broadcasts.

]]> 1959 Philco Safari Model H-2010 The 1959 Philco Safari Model H-2010 was the first transistorized, battery operated portable television. From www.tvhistory.tv "It all begins with this Philco set. Its dimensions are actually quite large: 8" wide x 15" tall x 5-1/2" deep, but the race to build smaller and smaller sets was on! RCA and GE had displayed laboratory models of transistorized TV sets in 1956 and 1958, respectively, but Philco beat everyone in the world to the punch by introducing the Safari model in late 1959. They even beat Sony to market, who were planning a release of their set shortly. The unique design of this set (to conserve battery power) was the ingenious method of using a small 2" vertically mounted picture tube, which reflected the television image at a 45 degree angle off a concave mirror! At the optimum viewing distance of precisely 4 and 1/2 feet, you had what appeared to be the same size image given by a 14 inch picture tube! There was one serious drawback; This system required a VERY narrow viewing angle. If you were off by a few degrees, the picture would be cut-off easily. The consequence? A stiff neck after a very short viewing time! However, it was transistorized -- battery powered -- and portable -- all amazing features in 1959."

]]> 7" Portable DTV (Insignia, now sold @ Radio Shack as Axion AXN-8701.) We look at the Inginia 7" LCD DTV, which is now sold only at Radio Shack, under a different brand name. Like most portables, the reception is not as good as the big TV's, and shows that the built-in antenna is poorply designed, but works respectively well with any external, even rabbit-ears.
