The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) officially standardised on aluminium in 1990. Most people in the U.S. are unaware of the "official" change. Aluminum has been relegated into a sort of slang at this point. Sir Humphrey Davy started the confusion by using 3 different spellings in the early years after he developed a way to separate the element from its oxides. Webster's DIctionary used the latest spelling in their 1913 edition. Davy changed it later, WD didn't.

I found your posts helpful, but if you think aluminum is wrong, I think you are a bit of an extremist :-) The original word *is* "Aluminium". That doesn't mean the other one that evolved and is in everyday use is wrong (I speak "English" English myself btw). If you read up on the evolution of the English language you'll see how arbitrary a lot of it all is - fascinating, but very arbitrary.

BTW, Internet is supposed to be always capitalized. It is a proper name of a place. Like a country, state, city, street, etc. My intent is to be informative and I don't give a flying ... about people that accuse me of being a Grammar Nazi. Not my problem if some people don't want to learn or have a bad attitude toward people that try to know what is going on. Not long ago I learned that Aluminum is wrong. It is Aluminium. You can thank Sir Humphrey Davy and Webster's Dictionary for that.

I must admit, I've been pretty sloppy with the English language for years. The last 10 years or so I decided to step up my professionalism and pronounce tech words and acronyms fully and correctly for end users. I've found it helps the people I deal with understand what I am trying to explain to them. Just a note, many people don't even notice the difference in the pronunciation of Internet. To clarify, Internet; the "I" is pronounced like in the word "pit" not like an "e" in the word "pet".

Internet is (Inter Net not Enter Net or Inner Net) But it's just how some people pronounce internet whilst talking fast.
