I had told you at one time that my LCD TV was brighter in the left corner when it's first turned on. As you suspected, it's not the backlight getting brighter. I finally realized that the picture is just faint in that corner for a few minutes .... then it becomes stronger. The colors not coming in strong at first makes it brighter in that corner. Now, when I first turn it on, the whole screen is white or gray and then the picture starts. Is this a bad screen or controller board? Thank you.

I would recommend you test the suspected capacitors before replacing them.
Mar 16, 2012 efaustus9 Says:
Excellent information. My samsung HDTV wouldn't turn on, after opening it up I found four faulty capacitors out of a series of six lined up. I replaced the faulty ones with new ones I purchased on ebay. Now about a year later my tv wont turn on again. None of the capacitors are bulging this time though. Now I wonder if I should try and replaced the last two original capacitors or replace them all with digikey ones to see if it resolves the problem. What do you think?

Feb 16, 2012 GrantsPassTVRepairs Says:
Yes, There are some instances where a bad capacitor on the main board can prevent the TV from turning on, but it's more common on the power supply board.

Will bulging caps on main board cause TV to not power in?

Sorry I can't find where you replied last so I'm just going to post here. To recap; I was having trouble with a LCD TV that would be momentarily bright on one side and then would return to normal, then, night before last, the whole screen flashed bright white and then went dark ... a few seconds later, it returned to normal. Typical amateur as I am, I was guessing what was wrong, ie, short, etc. . I realize now, this could be nothing more than the need for a surge protector (I live in apts.).

Troubleshooting & Repairing LCD TVs by John Preher at
http://preher-tech.com/lcdtvre pairguideaffidDMaltz.aspx
For someone new to electronics the first few pages of this book may be a bit challenging but the majority of this book is easy reading with lots of pictures, diagrams, and useful troubleshooting techniques. This book covers the general theory of LCD TVs and many useful troubleshooting techniques. The most important points I learned from Johns book are the main test points and their approximate voltages.

How to troubleshoot and repair Switch Mode Power supplies by Jestine Yong at http://davestv.jestinemichelle pow.click2sell.eu This is a 271 page ebook packed with helpful information on how to troubleshoot switch mode power supplies which are found in many kinds of electronic equipment. I have many books and videos on this kind of power supply but this is by far the best of my collection.
I created a video where I demonstrate some of the fundamentals of switching power supplies at this link. http://www.tvrepairinfo.com/sw itch-mode-power-supplies.html

Testing electronic components and finding unknown resistor values by Jestine Yong. http://5d8388ioop4nfm862d1b0u7 sbj.hop.clickbank.net/
I have not yet read Jestines book on Testing electronic components but I was told it's a good one for a person just starting out in electronic troubleshooting.

How to repair LCD Computer Monitors by Jestine Yong at
http://davestv.jestinewilliaml cd.click2sell.eu
Even though this book was about computer monitor repair I found most of the troubleshooting techniques he demonstrates also applied to LCD TV repair so I was glad to have read it. Much like the book on Switch Mode Power Supplies it was easy to read and similar to Johns Prehers book on LCD repair. It had lots of pictures and good troubleshooting techniques.
============================== ==========
Mikes TV case histories The latest paperback edition has 1177 case histories on LCD, CRT, Plasma and Projection TVs. at http://www.mikestvtips.com/ 1-410-272-4984
When I first started in the TV repair business and my troubleshooting skills were not that great often times Mike's case histories told me exactly which parts I needed to replace and it often saved me from having to purchase a great many schematics. I have been using his case histories since 1995 and I would not be with out them. If you call him please be considerate of his time zone and call between 11:00 AM TO 8:PM Eastern time only.
============================== ==========
John Prehers LCD TV case histories at
http://preher-tech.com/lcdtvre paircasehistoriesaffidDMaltz.aspx
This ebook has 56 case histories on nothing but LCD TVs
and which parts he replaced to get them going. I found this ebook was helpful in better understanding the connection between certain symptoms and their causes. Right now it's only 10 dollars.
